2020 here we come!

With a new exciting season beginning on both the European and PGA tours it's time to get our own games ready for the year ahead. You may have all seen an article a few years ago about Rory McIlroy setting his goals for the upcoming season. He takes the first plane ticket on the year and writes down his 3 main aims for that year. He then keeps that ticket with him all year to remind himself of what he is trying to achieve.

It is such a powerful tool to keep those goals with you. I know a lot of people that get caught up in the #newyearnewme and set a number of different goals without giving it some proper thought. By the end of January they have gone out the window and the daily routine from the previous year continues. Having read a very good book last year, Routine Machine, I want to offer some advice on how to set and achieve your goals this year.

A lot of the time we set a goal to achieve without really thinking about how we are going to achieve it. You'll see a lot of people say I want to get fitter, join a gym but no have any idea about the routines they want to follow or how to actually achieve their goals. They will have a run on the treadmill, try a few machines and then with little weight being lost they will give up and return to their normal routine.

We are going to start by picking one goal that you want to achieve, just one main thing for the entire year. Then you will need to pick 4 different things to help achieve the main thing. These 4 areas need to be able to be split across the year. For example, if your main goal was to reduce the amount of putt, one of your 4 goals to help may be to get a putter fitting in the first 3 months. The 2nd thing could be some putting lessons in the next 3 months and so on. Each time you do something it should help you achieve your overall goal.

This idea is from, Routine Machine, well worth a read if you get the chance. The ideas are based around business but there is no reason why you couldn't adapt them to golf.
