Lee Westwood - Could he sneak a major?

Lee Westwood produced four days of near perfect golf last week to claim the Abu Dhabi Championship. It was his 25th victory spread over 4 decades. He has been world number 1 in that time and tipped by many to win a major, but it never came. After Sergio Garcia claimed his first (and only major so far) at Augusta National in 2017 the unwanted title of ‘best player to never win a major’ fell towards Westwood. As he has got a little older that title has slowly passed its way to Ricky Fowler but with Westwood’s fantastic victory the questions are bound to come back up again.

One area of Westwood’s game that has been scrutinised by professionals, coaches, publications and anyone who’s ever picked up a club is his short game, especially his putting. Last week saw him adopt the claw grip and it was a marked improvement. He looked more comfortable over the ball and let the stroke do the work. Westwood also said he practiced less before the competition which maybe took some pressure off? What ever caused the change in form it was very nice too see.

What will now follow will be more media attention at his next few competitions and the majors. His win took him back into the worlds top 50 giving him access to the world golf championship events. This will also show how he’s competing with the worlds top players. I hope this season continues and we see Lee at next year’s Ryder Cup!
